I know there is interest in doing the whole route some day. I think that would be quite interesting. I had the pleasure to drive parts of it during AMVIV last year.

I also stumbled across a TV series of a motorcyclist who drove the whole thing. I haven't watched it all yet though.

This would be a lot of fun however it is also a long drive as we would need to start at either Chicago or Santa Monica. We had talked about going to AMVIV 10 next year and then to take Route 66 across California to the Santa Monica pier and coming back along the California and Oregon coast. I have travelled Route 66 from Flagstaff Arizona to Santa Fe New Mexico, it takes you by the petrified forest, and the Wigwam Motel in Winslow. There are sections of the "Mother Road of America" that are missing or covered by I40.
